I didn’t want to admit it at first but I’ve been failing on all fronts this last month. Burnout has been in full affect for awhile. That’s why I haven’t been very active in this group.
Do you ever wish you would stop failing on all fronts? Is your work, exercise, spirituality, and relationships simply not aligned?
“Yes I do and yes that’s how I feel!” – Me
My favorite way to fight burnout is not admit it’s happening and slowly crawl in to a deep dark hole.
Let me be the first to remind you…If you don’t admit your slowly falling in to that hole, you’ll be running from the underlying problem.
I was tricking myself thinking I was being productive but was actually far from it.
I haven’t been writing my monthly e-mails and I even stopped shooting my weekly YouTube videos. I had great positive feedback from my videos but that wasn’t enough to keep me motivated.
My daily journal has been empty for several weeks. The journal is one my most potent growth weapons, readily at my finger tips. I even started writing a book but haven’t touched it for more than two weeks.
My online goal setting course is 1/3 finished but I dropped the ball and haven’t gotten back to it. I have a laundry list of things on my to-do list but they are still staring back at me, incomplete.
I even carved out a day on a recent trip to catch up on things but I went on a hike instead (still pretty happy with that decision but I could have done both).
If you’ve read my blogs before you probably remember me talking about motivation and willpower being finite resources. They will not be the sustainable energy that moves you towards your dreams.
That’s what’s even more frustrating. I know better!
And now I’m here, confessing but I’ll stop…even though I could keep going.
Now let me write a list of all my excuses….
Just kidding I WILL NOT do that. If you are one of my clients you know that is a first class ticket to a victim mentality.
I don’t allow this type of thinking to take place in my presence because it is a cancer to our minds and bodies.
It is crucial for you to know though that it is always a temptation of mine. I’m not super-human as much as I’d like YOU to think that.
I focus on having a Solution Mindset. This is a phrase I coined when I stared back at myself in the mirror one dark day and realized I had a choice. I could either think of solutions to my problems or reasons why I couldn’t fix them.
Maintaining a Solution Mindset doesn’t save you from failures. You can read my list of failures one more time if you’d like : )
However, this mindset does program your brain to create more productive thoughts in the long-run.
This is all I care about. The long-run. I want to focus on investing in the long-run because I know that all my investments will compound over time. Versus a short term mindset that ensures high stress levels, inevitable unhappiness, and very minimal gains.
I’m confessing my failures to you today for one big reason. I need to maintain a mutual trust between you and I. If I don’t admit that I’m human and make more mistakes then I can count, you’ll think my social media or the “highlight reel” of my life is my reality. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Now let me explain what failure means in my life. We all attach a meaning to everything in life and it’s up to us to make sure the meaning serves us in a positive way.
I have found in my 28 years of life that the more I fail and use it as feedback the faster I grow as a human being. Early on I used to be deathly afraid of failure. After I mentally restructure what failure means, I charge forward without worry more often than not.
I like to say, “Feel the fear and do it anyway!”
This new meaning of failure allowed me to grow in all aspects of life much faster and more efficiently.
I’m addicted to this growth. It’s a big part of what wakes me up in the morning. Sometimes process of growing can be tiresome but the results it produces in my life are priceless.
I challenge you to look at the last 2-4 weeks of your life and write down all the things you have failed to do. Make sure you actually write them down, this is imperative. Do it!
Once you write them down, write out a solution for each of these failures. And if you don’t have a solution maybe it’s a moot point and you’re spinning your wheels, wasting your energy. If this is the case, you can discard it as a goal or desire and stop wasting your limited resources.
Take ten minutes out of your day and do this one simple task. I guarantee you will find peace and clarity after doing this.
Most of us have brains that are overloaded with obstacles, failures, and motives we don’t even realize we have.
After you release them from your mind and create solutions for them you’ll notice you have a lot less to think about.
Now that you have unlocked more space in your brain you can organize these solutions in to priorities and eventually, goals to accomplish.
We can dive deeper in to that down the road but start with this short exercise and don’t let your failures beat you down.
I met with one of my coaches recently and they helped me come up with more solutions. I can’t wait to reboot on some of my goals and discard some of the goals that don’t currently fit in to my lifestyle.
Join me in a new found sense of freedom!
Oh and by the way, if you actually want to put forth the effort to create a Solution Mindset, send me what you find out about yourself. I would love to look over it with you.
